I found a news article of a program given in 1906 in Caroline County.  It was in memory of the Southern Soldiers from  Caroline Co. who fought in the Civil War.  I noticed a key speaker for the day was the then Governor of Virginia Claude A. Swanson.  I truly believe our Claude Pitts was named for this Virginia Governor.

Claude S. Pitts was killed by a hit and run driver on Rte 2&17 in Caroline county while walking. He was only 26 years old.   The driver was never discovered.
